Ford Motor Company began production of the Bronco in 1965 (for the 1966 model year) as a way to compete with the growing popularity of off-road vehicles such as the Jeep CJ5 and IH Scout. Built entirely on its own platform, this was a completely new product line which included a short wheelbase of 92” giving it the stamp of approval for off-road capability. From 1966-1977, the Bronco remained very much similar from one year to the next with only minor adjustments being made in design and mechanics largely due to its instant popularity in the market. Since the beginning the most famous and popular of the Ford executives and designers were hands on with this project including the brainchild of the earliest model, Donald N Frey and even Lee Iacocca pushed for it to enter production. Still as popular if not even more so now, this legendary 4WD model even went on to win in many venues including the Baja 500 and Baja 1000 making its impact in the off-road community to this day.
GR Auto Gallery is pleased to present this highly original and California example of the 1966 Ford Bronco Roadster for your consideration. With all the right patina and plenty of drivability, this example comes with a black California plate clearly indicating it was blessed enough to stay the majority of its life in the warmer and less brutal weather areas of our country! From the outside, the paint is what appears to be the original color from the factory, the wheels and tires all in good shape, what shows as an original canvas top included with its braces intact and the silver seats which measure out to 19” high all leading us to believe this is not only the first year of the Bronco but one of the earlier examples of such! Everything is fully intact but with blemishes throughout the paint and interior making this a real unmolested example of a truly legendary ride! The mechanicals all seem to be in good working order and powered by their larger I6 engine which shifts along well with its 3-speed manual, the 4wd shifts in smoothly when put into neutral giving you all the power you would need to all the wheels, the badging still intact and both bumpers in good shape and not tapered downward so research shows this is a good sign that even those are true to the truck. A great find for those who love the earliest of Broncos and don't think beauty before originality and capability. Call or email us today for a closer look at this brute!
