When the GTO was introduced it disregarded GM's policy limiting the A-Body intermediate line to exceed engine displacement greater than 330 Cubic Inches. However, John DeLorean with the help of Bill Collins and Russ Gee, they sold the idea of the GTO as a option package and basically snuck it through the GM heads. It ruffled some feathers but the risk paid off. The GTO would in fact appeal to the youth market and GM also used this as an opportunity to put there best foor forward with what would become the Muscle car wars amongst the big three for the next eight years. Yes, the GTO can be credited to opening the door to this wonderful time in automotive history. We here at GR Auto Gallery of Traverse City are so happy to present what is in fact a very rare story and history along with a tremendous car. In May of 1964 a gentleman by the name of Bill Lovett ordered his GTO with a couple options including a Muncie 4-speed, 4-barrell, ride and handling package, a upgraded 3.23 rear axle along with a few other comfort and convenience options at the tune of $3,150.00. He would take delivery in June of that year from Stan Long Pontiac in Detroit and have the car in his possession until January 2022 when we purchased the car. The car has had one repaint in 1986, a engine rebuild shortly thereafter along with a convertible top at that time. It is finished in Grenadier Red over black interior that from the documentation we have is all original including the carpets. Mr. Lovett was awarded a plaque from the Pontiac meet in 2019 naming his one of just a few original owners of a 1964 Pontiac GTO left. If the story isn't cool enough yet, maybe the paperwork and documentation will get your Goat.. There is everything you can imagine when it comes to documentation with this car, copy of window sticker, original sales invoice, original loan documents, the build sheet is still visible under the back seat and this appears to be a numbers matching car. In addition, it has all service history from day one as well as restoration receipts and paperwork from the 1980's. Everything works, all lights, fan and gauges. This is a Michigan built, Michigan owned and kept since the beginning. There is so much information including a write up that the owner did in 2005 regarding his ownership of the vehicle. The car starts, runs, idles and goes down the road as it should, the convertible top operates perfectly and even and comes with everything you see in the pictures. This GTO is not freshly restored and there are some minor imperfections in the paint, the original front fenders were replaced in 1986 with rust free examples found in AZ at the time. However, this is a tremendous opportunity to buy such a well-documented car. It is not every day you can tell a story like this especially with such an iconic piece of automotive history.
