The Porsche 550 Spyder is quite possibly the most recognizable competition based car produced. Actively participating in the European and US Championships as early as 1953 to 1965, the 550 variants recorded an astounding 95 overall victories along with 75 class wins in 370 starts. Its low, wide stance along with its impressive power to weight, the 550 Spyder dominated against more powerful cars above its class. Actor / Driver James Dean affectionately described the car as “The Giant Killer”. Dean died in a fatal accident in his 550 Spyder, “Little Bastard” September 30, 1955. Today, the cars popularity far outweighs its production and as a result, companies such as “Beck” (now Special Edition, inc) continue to build high quality replicas to meet the continuing demand for the legendary sports car.

GR Auto Gallery is excited to bring this classic 550 Spyder by Beck. This is an early build, #224, that was built at Becks original facility in California. The car is built on Beck's proven tube chassis and hand laid fiberglass body. It is finished in classic Victory Silver over red interior. The car is powered by its spirited VW air cooled 4-cylinder engine, (displacement not certain, but believed to be 1600cc), 4 speed manual transaxle, and rear wheel drive. Highlights include: 15-inch chrome wheels with 5 lug pattern, sport seats, machined tooled dash fascia, VDO gauges, Mona-Lita steering wheel, aluminum valve covers, etc. The presents itself as excellent driver quality in all areas. The odometer reads 3685 kilometers but it does appear that the speedo is in-op. Mechanically, this Beck Spyder is a complete blast to drive. It is fast, it handles exceptionally well and remains a spirited driver in all respects.

Early Beck 550 Spyder's are considered the best replica 550 in the business. Chuck Beck was first to the table to replicate this legend. Beck's quality of workmanship is second to none. The 550 Spyder still has mass appeal and with original examples now selling in excess of 6+ million dollars, quality tributes such as the Beck Spyder here are considered collectibles, they are gaining value and is a worthy investment at the price offered here. The car is titled as a 1992 Assembled.
