The 1972 Buick Riviera marked the second year of the car's bold third-generation styling, often referred to as the “boat-tail” design, a nod to the rear-end styling that resembled a speedboat hull. Designed under the direction of GM stylist Bill Mitchell, the Riviera's sweeping lines, forward-thrusting nose, and sharply tapered tail set it apart from other full-size personal luxury cars of its time.
