The Impala SS brought a performance aspect to the family sedan and Chevrolet garnered street cred by stuffing a Corvette-based LT1 5.7L V8 under the hood. From a mechanical standpoint, it used the Caprice 9C1 police package as its base and got most of its equipment that was previously only available to law enforcement & government agencies. This included a sport-tuned suspension with reinforced shocks & springs, a high-capacity reverse flow cooling system, larger four-wheel disc brakes, limited slip differential, transmission cooler, dual exhaust, and a higher output electrical system. To make it stand out as not the typical Caprice, Chevrolet added slick 17” alloy wheels, suppressed “Impala SS” scripts on the rear quarter panels, and three distinct colors which varied over the three years the SS was produced.
