The Ford Bronco was designed to take on the Jeep CJ5 and the International Scout in the relatively new recreational 4-wheel drive market. The Bronco proved to offer more versatile than the Jeep and Scout. Its roominess and interior configuration offered much more utility than the Jeep and the driveline and gear ratios gave the Bronco a clear advantage over the Scout. When introduced in 1966 as a rugged, simple and economical compact SUV, the Bronco became an instant hit with the American public and soon became known for having many utility type uses as well as superior off road capability.
