In 1995 Lexus threw its hat in the SUV ring with the introduction of the LX450, based on the Toyota J80 Land Cruiser. The Land Cruiser, now in its 35th year, had such proven reliability and popularity on the international stage, it made perfect sense for Lexus, Toyota's luxury line sister, would develop a luxury full size SUV to compete with Range Rover. This came to fruition in 1998 when they introduce the LX470. Since the beginning of Lexus, they heavily marketed their “commitment to pursue perfection”. Lexus got it right the first time with the LX470. Based on Toyotas J100 platform and body, Lexus took the already popular and well-appointed Land Cruiser to a whole new level. Their luxury, utility, quality and proven mechanical reliability made them and instant hit and the LX 470 could not hit the ground fast enough. Buyers found themselves on waiting lists and paying premiums. V8 power was introduced to the LX line, standard options such as leather, leather and wood steering wheel, heated seats, power seats, wood trim, adjustable ride height, front independent suspension, and air suspension were just a few items. Lexus' luxury was ready to take on all comers.
