1972 Mercury Cougar

GR Auto Gallery is pleased to present this 1972 Mercury Cougar XR-7 Replica Convertible for purchase. The newly restyled Cougar from '71 carried over for '72 in which it weighed less and had only a 1” longer wheelbase than its predecessor. The front end now featured four fixed exposed headlights and the center grille piece was now larger. This Cougar came out of the Dearborn, MI assembly plant and it is number 3,466 of 53,702 built in 1972.

As with all production cars in 1972, manufactures no longer were able to use gross horsepower ratings but instead had to use net horsepower ratings. Under the hood of this Cougar is a 351ci Cleveland 2V V8 producing 240hp gross/164hp net matted to a C4 3-Speed Automatic. This is a correctly done XR-7 replica with all the emblems, wheels, and interior changed over. It also features a power top that operates well, A/C, power steering, power brakes, power windows, and power locks. The mileage showing is a little over 72,000 which is believed to be original.

Overall this is a good driver that could be taken to the next level if desired. The paint is very nice and shiny, the motor runs strong, the transmission shifts through all the gears, the power options all work well, and the interior is in decently well-kept condition but it could stand to use a bit of refurbishment. Get in, drop the top, and cruise!
