The Porsche 550 Spyder is quite possible the most recognizable competition-based car produced. Actively participating in the European and US Championships from 1953 to 1965, the 550 variants recorded and astounding 95 overall victories along with 75 class wins in 370 starts. Its low, wide stance along with impressive power to weight, the 550 Spyder dominated against more powerful cars above its class. Actor / driver James dean affectionately described the car as “The Giant Killer”. Today, the cars popularity far outweighs its production and as a result, companies such as “Beck Development” design and build high quality replicas to meet the continuing demand for the legendary sports car.

The Beck 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder offered here is car number 071 from Beck. It is one of the original early production, hand-laid fiberglass cars built by Beck Development of upland California. This is a three-owner car. The rolling chassis was ordered by and built for an enthusiast from Blytheville, AR. The original purchase date from beck was March 21, 1986. The car was put in storage and never completed until it was sold in 1999 to an aerospace engineer, yes a rocket scientist, who then meticulously completed the car to what it is today. He kept the car until 2019 where the third owner kept the car for a short period of time until our recent acquisition. Today at just over 7000 miles since completion, the car remains excellent mechanically and cosmetically and is ready for immediate enjoyment.

The car is presented in classic Signal Red over tan interior. This Beck 550 Spyder is powered by a professionally prepared 1776cc air cooled engine with dual Weber 40 IDF carbs, 4 speed manual transaxle and rear wheel drive. Highlights include: speedster style seats, banjo steering wheel with Porsche horn button, Pertronix ignition with high performance coil, electric fuel pump with pressure regulator, Magnaflow exhaust, KYB high performance gas shocks (valved for 550), Taylor Pro Race ignition wires, enlarged oil sump with remote filter, “Wide 5” 5 bolt Porsche chrome rims, aluminum brake drums, Sumitomo ultrahigh performance tires, vintage latch and link seat belts, tonneau cover, period correct emblems and badging, etc. Recent services include: valve adjustment, shift linkage adjustment, carbs synced, timing adjusted, plugs replaced, fluids, complete alignment including proper ride height and camber, brake service, steering box adjustment and new axle boots. The car is a complete blast to drive. It pulls strong in every gear, offers excellent handling and responsive steering and it brakes straight and true.

This car is titled as a 1955 Porsche Convertible. Documentation includes: the original statement of origin from Charles Beck Development, Inc., the original sales order, the original Bill of Lading from Beck Development to the original owner, original owner information, an organized binder of receipts, notes, schematics, drawings etc. that documents the mechanical completion of the car, etc. Early Beck Spyders remain very desirable and values continue to climb while offering a massive fun factor. No two year waiting period to have one built, this car is available today.
