1973 Volkswagen Thing

It is our pleasure to present this classic Volkswagen for consideration. The Thing was only in production for four years (1972-1975) and was only imported into the U.S. in 1973 and 1974. It was presented as ultra-versatile convertible, which this example clearly embodies. The vehicle has been completely gone through and has been restored with no expense spared.

Known as the Type 181, this German manufactured automobile is powered by a period correct 1600cc dual port flat 4-cylinder rear-mounted engine mated to a 4-speed floor shifted manual transmission – both the engine and transmission have been completely rebuilt. The current owner has had this Thing for the past 7 years and has outfitted it with new nerf bar side steps and bumpers plus Tiki wood floors. The interior has been completely refinished to match the yellow/black color combo on the exterior. The convertible soft top is top of the line and ordered new from The Thing Shop in Arizona. All glass slider windows are in new condition and all can be removed, as well as the doors. The convertible top goes down with ease along with the windshield too.
